Future N-reactors to be located in nuclear parks

New Delhi: All future nuclear reactors in India will be located in nuclear parks, the first of which is being set up in Jaitapur in Maharashtra, head of Nuclear Power Corporation of India, S K Jain said.
Each of these nuclear parks would have between eight to ten nuclear reactors, all of same type and capacity, which will be set up in phases, Jain said.
He was speaking after NPCIL signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the French company Areva for building two nuclear reactors in Jaitapur. The number of reactors at Jaitapur would be eventually increased to eight and aim at generating between 8,000-10,000 MW of electricity.
"We are in the process of finalising more sites for locating these nuclear parks. These would be announced very soon," he said.
Many of the current atomic power stations also have more than two reactors. Jain said setting up nuclear parks would ensure a planned development of the site, the infrastructure around it and eventually come to be cheaper than stations with just one or two reactors.
The new reactors would also be high-capacity ones, in the range of 1000 MW and above. The two being set up in Jaitapur by Areva are 1650 MW each and the ones that would be built there at a later stage would also be of the same capacity, he said.
The Jaitapur reactors are also based on a new technology, EPR which has been developed by Areva. It is currently developing four such reactors, two in China, one in France and another in Finland. EPRs, or European Pressurised Reactors, have a slight advantage over the reactors that are being currently used in India in that no heavy water is required in them.

Maharashtra DGP's appointment set aside by HC

Mumbai: In a significant judgment that would have far-reaching implications on future appointments, Bombay High Court on Thursday set aside the appointment of appointment of senior IPS officer Anami N Roy as Maharashtra's Director General of Police. The judgment came in wake of a Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) order that had in October set aside Roy's appointment.
The High Court has directed the state Government to start the selection process and appoint a new DGP within four weeks. The court has, however, stayed the judgment for a period of two weeks for the aggrieved parties to move the Supreme Court.
The court has also passed strictures against the Government and observed that the whole selection procedure was based on irrelevant considerations, non-application of mind and arbitrarily.
In October, CAT had set aside the appointment of Roy following an application moved by Suprakash Chakravarti, the-then DGP, Homeguards and currently the DG, ACD. Holding that the state was bound to consider the three officers who were senior to Roy for state DGP's post, CAT held that the whole process of selection and appointment of A N Roy is untenable in law and on facts. Hence a direction is required to the state Government to convene the meeting of review selection process by duly taking into consideration three senior-most officers.

Ola’s loss, Ola lost

With his chief ministerial ambitions dashed to the ground with the installation of Ashok Gehlot on the coveted post in Rajasthan, Union Mines Minister Sis Ram Ola seems to be finding it hard to focus on more mundane matters these days. The other day the octogenarian leader from Rajasthan was noticed in the office of Corporate Affairs Minister Prem Chand Gupta, located on the fourth floor of Shastri Bhawan in the Capital. Ola, in red slippers, looked confused and unaware of his surroundings. He would look at the minister’s name-plate, then the door, and then the corridor. Finally, he decided to enter the minister’s chamber. Within a minute a visibly surprised Gupta, with folded hands, was seen ushering the Mines Minister out. The explanation was simple: Ola had confused Gupta’s office for own, located three floors down.

No bailouts for climate crisis: Pranab

New Delhi: Warning that there are no bailouts for a climate crisis, India on Thursday told developed nations not to cite the current financial crisis as an excuse to renege on their commitments to address global warming.
“There are no bailouts for a climate crisis. The financial crisis should not become an excuse for developed countries to renege on their commitments,” External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said here inaugurating the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS).
“Climate change should also not be an excuse to add a greater burden or impose conditionalities onto the development challenges that developing countries face,” he said.
Noting that the response to the financial crisis demonstrated that the international community can work together, Mukherjee said climate change provided an unique opportunity for joint action.
“The large amounts of public funds that are being deployed to address the financial crisis is a testimony to the fact that we can, given the requisite political will, generate similar funds to tackle climate change,” he said.

President Obama nominated New Hampshire Senator Judd Gregg to be the next secretary of commerce. If confirmed by the Senate, Gregg will be the third Republican in Obama’s Cabinet.
“Now, clearly Judd and I don’t agree on every issue, most notably who should have won the election,” Obama said. “But we do agree on the urgent need to get American businesses and families back on their feet. … And we know the only way to solve the great challenges of our time is to put aside stale ideology and petty partisanship and embrace what works.”
Today is the first day on the job for another Obama Cabinet member: Eric Holder, the nation’s first African-American attorney general. Chocolatier Creates Candy to Stimulate Male Sex Drive

Just in time for Valentine's Day a New Zealand chocolatier says she created a new candy that acts as a male aphrodisiac, the Australian Associated Press reported.
Former food scientist and owner of Mamor Chocolates, Hanna Frederick, has made headlines for her crazy candy concoctions including beer-flavored and deer antler chocolate.
Now, the Auckland, Australia businesswoman is hoping to capitalize on Valentine's Day with her Tongkat Ali-infused chocolates.
Tongkat Ali is an herb that comes from a tree found in Southeast Asia. It is believed to stimulate testosterone production in men, giving a boost to the sex drive. It has been nicknamed the "Asian Viagra," but, like most herbal remedies, there are very few scientific studies backing its benefits.
The chocolates, which can be ordered online, deliver a "small but noticeable" aphrodisiac effect, Frederick claims.

Asia needs global economic recovery to exit slowdown: IMF

WASHINGTON: Asian nations will need a recovery in the global economy before the region can exit a slowdown as its trade and financial linkages have increased with the rest of the world, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director, Dominique Strauss-Kahn said. Most Asian economies have room to boost their fiscal stimulus packages to spur growth, Strauss-Kahn said in an online press briefing in Washington. The region needs higher domestic consumption to be less vulnerable to export demand, and the shift can be done through more public spending, he said. “Asian economies cannot recover alone without the rest of the world,” Strauss-Kahn said. “A rapid recovery in Asia once the world economy regains its footing is possible.” Developing Asia will probably expand until 2010 at an average 5.5 percent, while in the present year it could 2.7 percent. IMF MD underlined this fact that if the world depends on trade protectionism for saving their economy, then it would be a great blunder.

Google launches ‘Latitude’

NEW YORK: Google has developed a new service called Latitude that will mean mobile phone users will be able to track the movements of their friends and family. Those using the Latitude tool will be able to see exactly where their contacts are on a detailed map, using their own phone or computer, and then watch as they move along streets. However, the launch has raised concerns about security. It is expected that the feature, called Latitude, will prove popular with parents who want to keep tabs on the whereabouts of their children without having to call them, and with groups of friends trying to meet in busy city centers or at musical festivals. Latitude plots the position of mobile users by finding out which phone masts or wireless Internet hotspots they are close to. This technique, known as triangulation, has long been possible and is used in court cases to place a defendant at the scene of a crime. The service can even provide directions to help mobile users navigate their way through the streets to meet their friends.

Obama views children's health bill as first step

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama sees expansion of government health insurance to millions of lower-income children as a first step of several to come in providing coverage for all Americans. Ending a two-year effort by Democrats, Obama signed legislation late Wednesday that will allow about 7 million children to continue coverage through the State Children's Health Insurance Program and allow an additional 4 million to sign up. Unlike other developed countries, the United States does not have universal health care. The measure was similar to two bills vetoed by former President George W. Bush. It was pushed through both the House and Senate by Democrats eager to give Obama an early victory on health care. Most lawmakers and advocacy groups in the health reform debate acknowledge that the next steps toward reform will be harder than expanding SCHIP, given the increasing federal deficit.

Obama’s Plane Palin Problem

BEAVER, Pa. –
Reporters covering Barack Obama heard the news aboard Obama 1 (the campaign for the first time chartered a second plane for the swelling press corps), just before takeoff. We were briefly assured by senior Obama traveling staff that neither Obama nor running mate Joe Biden would have any on-camera comment about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s historic elevation as John McCain’s running mate.
So we dialed up the Obama press shop and found ourselves in the middle of a ripe field of dismissive comments about Palin’s lack of experience, her tenure as mayor of a small town, a row that’s now the subject of state investigation into pressure to fire an ex-brother-in-law, and other choice morsels that sought to portray Palin as something of a political midget.
These various split-second digs took full form in an official campaign statement moments later from spokesman Bill Burton:
“Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain’s commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush’s failed economic policies — that’s not the change we need, it’s just more of the same.”
That statement arrived just before takeoff (about 9:30 a.m. MDT). Not 30 minutes later, senior adviser Linda Douglass, reading from her Blackberry, gave the traveling press a very different statement, this one from Sens. Obama and Biden:“We send our congratulations to Governor Palin and her family on her designation as the Republican nominee for vice president. Her selection is yet another encouraging sign that all barriers are falling in our politics and while we obviously have differences over how to best lead this country forward Governor Palin is an admirable person and will add a compelling new voice to this campaign.”
What happened?
Did the campaign suddenly regret failing to take note of Palin’s unique place in American history as the first woman tapped by the Republican Party as a vice presidential nominee? Did it regret missing an opportunity to tell women (especially Hillary Clinton loyalists) across the country that Palin deserved at least a cursory compliment before being subjected to the natural rough-and-tumble or presidential politics? Did it regret a swift descent into the negative, back-and-forth politics that Obama has so earnestly railed against?
It would appear so.
Upon arriving in Pennsylvania, Obama went out of his way –in word and deed — to praise Palin as the GOP vice presidential nominee and welcome her to the political big leagues.
“You know, I haven’t met her before. She seems like a compelling person, obviously a terrific story, personal story,” Obama said to the TV pool while touring a bio-diesel plant outside of Pittsburgh. “And you know, I’m sure that she will help make the case for the Republicans. Unfortunately, the case is more of the same. And so, ultimately, John McCain is at the top of the ticket.
As I indicated in my speech last night, I think that he wants to take the country in the wrong direction. I’m assuming Governor Palin agrees with him in his policies. But the fact that she’s been nominated I think, or soon will be nominated, I think is one more indicator of this country moving forward. The fact that you’ve got a woman as the nominee of one of the — (as) the vice presidential nominee of one of the major parties — I think is one more hit against the glass ceiling and I congratulate her and look forward to a vigorous debate. I’m pleased with my choice for vice president, Joe Biden. I think he’s the man who can help me guide this country in a better direction and help working families.”
Asked about the stark difference in tone and substance from his campaign’s statement and his, Obama said the following:
“You know, I think that, you know, campaigns start getting these hair triggers and that statement that Joe and I put out reflects our sentiments.”
At 4:50 p.m. EDT Obama called to congratulate Palin from his campaign bus. According to senior adviser Robert Gibbs, Obama told Palin she would be “a terrific candidate and that he looked forward to seeing her on the campaign trail.” Gibbs also said Obama wished Palin “good luck, but not too much luck.”
The facts speak for themselves.
I will leave to others the judgment as to whether the first day of the Obama-Biden messaging on Palin could not A) Get off the ground properly or B) Found the need to reverse itself before stepping aboard the first day of a three-day bus tour.

Irritated Obama 'Stares Down' Reporter During Press Corps Visit

WASHINGTON -- President Obama paid a surprise visit to members of the White House press corps Thursday evening when he walked through their working area of the West Wing, but he quickly became agitated when he was confronted with a question by one of the journalists.
According to reports, when the Politico's Jonathan Martin asked the president about his nominee for deputy secretary of defense, William Lynn, Obama refused to answer, saying he was not there to take questions.
"I came down here to visit. I didn't come down here -- this is what happens. I can't end up visiting you guys and shaking hands if I am going to grilled every time I come down here," the president said.
Pressed further by the Politico reporter about his Pentagon nominee, Obama turned more serious, putting his hand on the reporter's shoulder and staring him in the eye.
"All right, come on," he said, with obvious irritation in his voice. "We will be having a press conference, at which time you can feel free to [ask] questions. Right now, I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself to you guys -- that's all I was trying to do," Politico.com reported.
The situation came to a close when a cameraman in the room interrupted, declaring: "I'd like to say it one more time: 'Mr. President.'"
The nominee in question, William Lynn, is a former lobbyist for defense contractor Raytheon, a pick Obama made in contradiction to his much-heralded anti-lobbying rules.
Obama was willing to field lighter questions, though.
Yes, he's discovered the gym in the White House residence. No, he hasn't played basketball yet on the outdoor White House court because it's been too cold.
The president's walk-through came without notice, causing a bit of a wild scene. Reporters started running toward him, wary of missing a single word. When one reporter who hadn't spotted Obama yet asked what everyone was rushing toward, another one responded: "The big guy."
Obama made it to the back of the briefing room, in a narrow hallway, where he shook hands.
"I've got to say, it's smaller than I thought," the president said as he looked around for the first time.
He introduced himself to those whom he didn't already know from the long campaign trail and said it would take a little while to learn everyone's names.
The president then continued on, walking by the media outlets' booths on the same floor.
Obama asked about the reasoning behind why certain media outlets had work space where they did. When he got an answer involving the intricacies of press corps protocol, Obama responded: "This is worse than the Middle East here -- who's sitting where and all that stuff."
As he walked through the area where journalists have lunch, Obama noticed a pair of vending machines that dispense soda and junk food.
"Looks like you have some healthy snacks, guys," Obama said.
Then he walked through the basement quarters, where several other news outlets set up shop. He said that was smaller than he expected too.

Tax Break for Homebuyers

WASHINGTON -- The Senate voted Wednesday night to give a tax break of up to $15,000 to homebuyers in hopes of revitalizing the housing industry, a victory for Republicans eager to leave their mark on a mammoth economic stimulus bill at the heart of President Barack Obama's recovery plan.
The Senate also softened a labor-backed "Buy American" provision in the bill that would require U.S.-made iron or steel be used in construction projects paid for by the stimulus package after Obama expressed concern the original language could trigger a trade war.
The change gives Mexico, Canada, the European Union and certain other major trading partners some comfort they would be exempted after a move by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to delete the "Buy American" requirement failed, 31-65.
The tax break for homebuyers adds $19 billion to the bill and was approved without dissent. It came on a day in which Obama pushed back pointedly against Republican critics of the legislation even as he reached across party lines to consider a reduction in the spending it contains.
"Let's not make the perfect the enemy of the essential," Obama said as Senate Republicans stepped up their criticism of the bill's spending and pressed for additional tax cuts and relief for homeowners. He warned that failure to act quickly "will turn crisis into a catastrophe and guarantee a longer recession."
Democratic leaders have pledged to have legislation ready for Obama's signature by the end of next week.
While they concede privately they will have to accept some spending reductions along the way, conservative Republicans failed in their initial attempts to force deep cuts in the bill.
Democrats also preserved a key priority for Obama, a break of up to $1,000 for couples who pay payroll taxes but whose earnings are so low they do not pay income tax.

Pervez Musharraf

Pervez Musharraf (Urdu: پرویز مشرف) (born 11 August 1943), NI(M)[1], HI(M), TBt[1], is the former President of Pakistan. Previously, he was Prime Minister of Pakistan as well as former Chief of Army Staff of the Pakistan Army.[2] On 18 August 2008, in a nationally-televised speech, he announced his resignation as president of Pakistan.
He seized power in 1999 by effecting a military coup d'état and has suspended the constitution of Pakistan twice since then. After Musharraf announced his intention to combat extremists, Western countries (including the United States and the United Kingdom) switched from a policy of sanctions to active support through military and monetary aid. He took power on 12 October 1999, ousting Nawaz Sharif, the elected Prime Minister, dismissed the national and provincial legislative assemblies, assumed the title of Chief Executive and became Pakistan's de facto head of government, thereby becoming the fourth Army chief of Pakistan to have assumed executive control. Later in 2001, Musharraf appointed himself to the office of President of Pakistan.
On 3 November 2007, only days before a bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan was to decide on a petition challenging the constitutional validity of his re-election as president in the controversial October 2007 elections, he, as Chief of Army Staff, suspended the constitution, jailed several justices and lawyers of the supreme court including Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, ordered the arrest of political dissidents and human rights activists, and shut down all private television channels.[3] On 3 November 2007, Musharraf declared a state of emergency in Pakistan which lasted until 15 December 2007. During this time, the constitution of the country was suspended.[4][5]
On 24 November 2007, the Pakistan Election Commission confirmed his re-election as President.[6]
On 18 August 2008, Pervez Musharraf resigned from the post of President of Pakistan under impeachment pressure from the coalition government. Consequently, his website was removed since he was no longer the President of Pakistan. A mirror website can be found at http://generalpervaizmusharraf.com/. Musharraf was succeeded on 6 September 2008, by Asif Ali Zardari, duly elected as Pakistan's 11th President since 1956.[7][8][9]

Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq

Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq (Arabic: محمد ضياء الحق‎) (b. August 12, 1924–August 17, 1988) was the president and military ruler of Pakistan from July 1977 to his death in August 1988. Appointed Chief of Army Staff in 1976, General Zia-ul-Haq came to power after he overthrew ruling Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in a military coup d'état on July 5, 1977 and became the state's third ruler to impose martial law. The coup itself was largely bloodless; however, he later had Bhutto executed.
Zia initially ruled for a year as Chief Martial Law Administrator (CMLA), and later assumed the post of President of Pakistan in September 1978. During his tenure, he advanced the Islamization and radicalization of Pakistan. To shore up the increasingly tenuous control of the central government over the tribal provinces, he appointed martial law administrators as governors of Balochistan and the tribal areas with wide powers, including the abridgement of civil liberties.
Zia was killed along with several of his top generals and the then United States Ambassador to Pakistan Arnold Lewis Raphel in a mysterious aircraft crash near Bahawalpur (Punjab) on August 17, 1988, the circumstances of which remain unclear. His death with the American ambassador gave rise to many conspiracy theories.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (Urdu: ذوالفقار علی بھٹو, Sindhi: ذوالفقار علي ڀُٽو, IPA: [zʊlfɪqɑːɾ ɑli bɦʊʈːoː]) (January 5, 1928April 4, 1979) was a Pakistani politician who served as the President of Pakistan from 1971 to 1973 and as Prime Minister from 1973 to 1977. He was the founder of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the largest and most influential political party in Pakistan. His daughter Benazir Bhutto also served twice as prime minister; she was assassinated on December 27, 2007.
Educated at the University of California at Berkeley in the United States and University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, Bhutto was noted for his mercurial brilliance and wit. He was executed in 1979 for authorizing the murder of a political opponent,[1][2] in a move was done under the directives of General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.[3][4]
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was from a Sindhi Family. Bhutto's supporters add the honorific title Shaheed, the Urdu word for "martyr", before his name, thus: Shaheed-e-Azam Zulfikar Ali Bhutto ("The Great Martyr"). Another respectful title commonly bestowed upon him by supporters is Quaid-e-Awam, or "Leader of the Masses" as he was indeed a populist statesman.

Abdul Qadeer Khan

Abdul Qadeer Khan (Urdu: عبدالقدیر خان; born April 1, 1936 in Bhopal, British India) is a Pakistani scientist and metallurgical engineer, widely regarded as the founder of Pakistan's nuclear program. His middle name is occasionally rendered as Quadeer, Qadir or Qadeer, and his given names are usually abbreviated to A.Q..
In January 2004, Khan confessed to having been involved in a clandestine international network of nuclear weapons technology proliferation from Pakistan to Libya, Iran and North Korea. On February 5, 2004, the President of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf, announced that he had pardoned Khan, who is widely seen as a national hero.[1]
In an August 23, 2005 interview with Kyodo News General Pervez Musharraf confirmed that Khan had supplied gas centrifuges and gas centrifuge parts to North Korea and, possibly, an amount of uranium hexafluoride.[2]
On May 30, 2008, ABC News reported that Khan, who previously confessed to his involvement with Iran and North Korea, now denies involvement with the spread of nuclear arms to those countries. He explained in an interview with ABC News that the Pakistani government and President Pervez Musharraf forced him to be a "scapegoat" for the "national interest." He denies ever traveling to Iran or Libya and claims that North Korea's nuclear program was well advanced before his visit.[3][4]

Khawaja Nazimuddin

Al-Hajj Sir Khawaja Nazimuddin, KCIE (Urdu: خواجہ ناظم الدین, Bengali: খাজা নাজিমুদ্দীন Khaja Nazimuddin) (July 19, 1894 - October 22, 1964) was the second Governor-General of Pakistan, and later the second Prime Minister of Pakistan as well.

Early life
He was born in Dacca, Bengal (now Dhaka, Bangladesh) into the family of the Nawabs of Dhaka.[citation needed]. He received his education from Dunstable Grammar School in England, then Aligarh Muslim University, and later Trinity Hall, Cambridge until the mid-1930s. He was knighted in 1934.

Politics
After returning to British India, he became involved in politics in his native Bengal. Nazimuddin was initially the Education Minister, but climbed the ranks to become the Chief Minister of the province prior to independence. Sir Khawaja also became the head of the Muslim League in Eastern India.

Governor-General of Pakistan
Upon the formation of Pakistan, he became an important part of the early government. After the early death of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Sir Khawaja succeeded him as the Governor-General of Pakistan. At this point in time, the position was largely ceremonial, and executive power rested with the Prime Minister. The first Prime Minister of Pakistan, Liaquat Ali Khan was assassinated in 1951, and Sir Khawaja stepped in to replace him.

Prime Minister
During Sir Khawaja's time as Prime Minister, Pakistan saw a growing rift within the Muslim League, especially between Punjabi and Bengali groups, as those were the two largest ethnic groups of Pakistan, but were separated by India. On 21 February 1952, a demonstration in the Language movement demanding equal and official status to the Bengali language turned bloody, with many fatalities caused by police firings. During his time in office, a framework was begun for a constitution that would allow Pakistan to become a republic, and end its Dominion status. Progress was made, but Sir Khawaja's time as Prime Minister would be cut short in 1953.
In 1953, a religious movement began to agitate for the removal of the Ahmadi religious minority from power positions, and demanded a declaration of this minority as non-Muslims. Sir Khawaja resisted such pressures; but riots broke out in The Punjab against both the government and followers of this religious minority. He responded by changing the governor of that province to Feroz Khan Noon, but the decision came late.

Resignation
Ghulam Muhammad, the Governor-General, asked the Prime Minister to step down. Sir Khawaja refused, but Ghulam Muhammad got his way by invoking a reserve power that allowed him to dismiss the Prime Minister. The Chief Justice, Muhammad Munir, of the "Federal Court of Pakistan" (now named as the Supreme Court of Pakistan), did not rule on the legality of the dismissal, but instead forced new elections. The new prime-minister was another Bengali born statesman, Muhammad Ali Bogra.
The dismissal of Sir Khawaja, the Prime Minister, by the Governor-General, Muhammad, signalled a troubling trend in Pakistani political history.

Death
Sir Khawaja died in 1964, aged 70.

Tomb of Khawaja Nazimuddin at Dhaka
He was buried at Suhrawardy Udyan in his hometown of Dhaka.

Liaquat Ali Khan

Liaquat Ali Khan (accurate transliteration Liāqat Alī Khān) (Urdu: لیاقت علی خان) listen (help·info) (2 October 1896 – 16 October 1951) was a Pakistani politician who became the first Prime Minister of Pakistan and Defence Minister. Liaquat rose to political prominence as a member of the All India Muslim League. He played a vital role in the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan. In 1947, he became the prime minister of Pakistan, a position that he held until his assassination in October 1951. In Pakistan, he is regarded as the right-hand man of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the leader of the Muslim League and first governor-general of Pakistan. Liaquat was given the titles of Quaid-e-Millat (Leader of the Nation), and posthumously Shaheed-e-Millat (Martyr of the Nation).
Liaquat was a graduate of Aligarh Muslim University, of Exeter College, Oxford University and Middle Temple, London. He rose into prominence within the Muslim League during the 1930s. Significantly, he is credited with persuading Jinnah to return to India, an event which marked the beginning of the Muslim League's ascendancy and paved the way for the Pakistan movement. Following the passage of the Pakistan Resolution in 1940, Liaquat assisted Jinnah in campaigning for the creation of a separate state for Indian Muslims. In 1947, British Raj was partitioned into the modern-day states of India and Pakistan.
As Prime Minister of Pakistan, Liaquat was responsible for guiding the new nation through its early years. Following partition, India and Pakistan came into conflict over the fate of Kashmir. Liaquat negotiated extensively with India's then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and pushed for the referral of the problem to the United Nations. During his tenure, Pakistan pursued close ties with Britain and the United States of America. The aftermath of Pakistan's independence also saw internal political unrest and even a foiled military coup against his government. After Jinnah's death, Liaquat assumed a more influential role in the government and passed the Objectives Resolution, a precursor to the Constitution of Pakistan.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah

Muhammad Ali Jinnah or Mahomed Ali Jinnah Urdu: محمد علی جناح (help·info) (December 25, 1876 – September 11, 1948), a 20th century politician and statesman, is generally regarded as the father of the state of Pakistan. He served as leader of the The Muslim League and served as Pakistan's first Governor-General. He is officially known in Pakistan as Quaid-e-Azam (Urdu: قائد اعظم — "Great Leader") and Baba-e-Qaum (باباے قوم) ("Father of the Nation"). His birthday is a national holiday in Pakistan.

Jinnah rose to prominence in the Indian National Congress expounding ideas of Hindu-Muslim unity and helping shape the 1916 Lucknow Pact with the Muslim League; he also became a key leader in the All India Home Rule League. He proposed a fourteen-point constitutional reform plan to safeguard the political rights of Muslims in a self-governing India. His proposals failed amid the League's disunity, driving a disillusioned Jinnah to live in London for many years.

Several Muslim leaders persuaded Jinnah to return in 1934 and re-organise the Muslim League. Jinnah embraced the goal of creating a separate state for Muslims as per the Lahore Resolution. The League won most Muslim seats in the elections of 1946, and Jinnah launched the Direct Action campaign movement to achieve independence of Pakistan, the strong reaction of Congress supporters resulted in communal violence across South Asia. The failure of the Congress-League coalition to govern the country prompted both parties and the British to agree to independence of Pakistan and India. As the Governor-General of Pakistan, Jinnah led efforts to rehabilitate millions of refugees, and to frame national policies on foreign affairs, security and economic development.

France, Spain pick up the pieces after storm kills 21

Updated at: 0435 PST, Monday, January 26, 2009 BORDEAUX: French and Spanish rescuers scrambled Sunday to reopen railways, douse forest fires and restore power to nearly a million homes plunged into darkness by a violent storm that killed 21 people in southern Europe."The priority on Monday is to re-establish the electricity as quickly as possible," said French President Nicolas Sarkozy as he visited a town in the southwestern region that bore the brunt of Saturday's storm. The majority of the deaths were in Spain, where four children died near Barcelona when the roof and a wall of a sports hall were brought down on their heads by winds that in some places reached more than 180 kilometres (110 miles) an hour. They were playing baseball outside the centre in Sant Boi de Llobregat as the storm -- which saw 20-metre (70-foot) high waves battering the Atlantic coast -- gathered force and they ran inside to shelter.Witnesses said they heard a loud sound, then saw that the roof and part of a wall had crumpled."The entire population is shocked by this tragedy," Jaume Bosch, the mayor of the town, said on the municipal website. The storm was one of the fiercest to hit western Europe in a decade. It blew in eastwards from the Atlantic Ocean, barrelling across southwest France and northern Spain -- ripping roofs off houses, pulling down power lines and flattening hundreds of thousands of trees.
